Good compost doesn’t need to be complicated.
American Soil compost can be used to add organic matter, improve soil structure, support healthier plant growth, and help tired or compacted soils perform better.
Below are simple starting points for common landscape applications.
Lawns
Topdressing an Existing Lawn
Apply approximately ¼ to ½ inch of compost evenly across the lawn.
For best results, rake or brush the compost down into the grass canopy so it reaches the soil surface.
1 cubic yard covers approximately:
- 1,300 sq. ft. at ¼ inch
- 650 sq. ft. at ½ inch
Topdressing works especially well following aeration or overseeding.
Establishing a New Lawn
Spread approximately 1–2 inches of compost over the soil and incorporate it into the upper several inches before seeding or laying sod.
This is especially useful on compacted, disturbed, or low-organic-matter soils.
Landscape & Flower Beds
For existing beds, apply approximately 1–2 inches of compost to the soil surface and lightly incorporate where practical.
For new beds or severely depleted soils, compost can be mixed more deeply into the existing soil before planting.
Compost is a soil amendment—not a replacement for mulch. If desired, mulch can be installed over the compost after application.
Trees & Shrubs
When planting trees or shrubs, focus on improving the surrounding soil rather than filling the planting hole with pure compost.
Mix compost into the surrounding native soil and use it as a light surface amendment after planting.
For established trees and shrubs, compost can be applied in a thin layer across the root zone while keeping material away from direct contact with trunks and stems.
Vegetable & Garden Beds
Apply approximately 1–2 inches of compost and work it into the upper few inches of existing soil before planting.
Existing gardens can also receive a lighter surface application between growing seasons to replenish organic matter.
Building Poor or Compacted Soil
If you’re working with heavily disturbed, compacted, or low-quality soil, compost can be incorporated at a heavier rate.
Start with approximately 2–3 inches of compost mixed into the upper 6 inches of soil where conditions allow.
The goal is not to replace the native soil—it’s to improve it.
How Much Do I Need?
A simple rule:
1 cubic yard covers approximately:
- 1,300 sq. ft. at ¼ inch
- 650 sq. ft. at ½ inch
- 325 sq. ft. at 1 inch
- 160 sq. ft. at 2 inches
- 110 sq. ft. at 3 inches
